What happens if I fail to appear for Jury Duty?
- Anyone who fails to report for jury service after being summoned may be subject to a fine not exceeding $100.00 (Section 40.23 of the Florida Statutes).
- In addition to the fine, you may also face contempt proceedings, which could result in the imposition of community service or other sanctions, including jail time.

How long will I need to serve as a juror?
Jury service does not end at a specific time of day; plan to be present for the entire first day of jury service. In most cases, a juror will serve for the length of one trial, which can last multiple days. The Court reserves the right to have jurors “on call.” Whether or not you serve on a jury trial, your jury service for that day will be recognized as fulfilling your obligation for at least one year.
- If you are selected to be a seated juror, your service concludes when the case is resolved.
- If you are not seated as a juror, your service is concluded, and your obligation has been met for at least one year.
What should I wear for Jury Duty?
Proper attire for the courtroom:
- NO shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, or bathing attire
- Casual attire that you would wear to an office setting
- All courtrooms are air-conditioned and may require a jacket or sweater.

If you have a disability that requires ADA accommodations for you to participate in a jury proceeding, you are entitled, at no cost to you, to the provision of assistance.

- Contact the Sarasota County Jury Office, (941) 861-8000, at least 7 days before your scheduled jury duty or immediately upon receiving a jury summons.
- If the time before the scheduled appearance is less than 7 days, please call 711.
- If you are hearing or voice-impaired, please call 711.
I received a notice (call/email/text) that there is a warrant for my arrest and/or a fine for failing to appear for Jury Duty. What do I do?
This is a type of fraud in which a bad actor (scammer) contacts a citizen, informing them that a warrant was issued for their arrest for missing jury duty. The scammer presents themselves as an official of the court and requests a payment be made (often by a ‘green dot’ re-loadable debit card) for you to avoid embarrassment, arrest, and incarceration.
Employees of the Clerk’s Office or the Jury Office do not initiate contact or communication with citizens to request payment by phone, text, or email for a failure to appear.
Report suspicious communication to the Clerk and Comptroller's Jury Office at (941) 861-7800.
