SARASOTA, FL—— The Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller warns the community of a new phone scam: Citizens are being called and informed that non-sufficient funds, or a bad check, must be addressed in order to stop a formal investigation. The caller presents themselves as a Clerk of Court employee.
Please note that Clerk of Court employees do not initiate phone calls for making payment by phone, and do not request personal financial information.
Protecting yourself against telephone-based scams is simple: Just hang up.
Call the Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller’s Office at (941) 861-7696 to determine whether the caller’s claims are legitimate. Unless you have initiated the call, never give out your personal information over the telephone.
