ALERT: Jury Duty Scam Reported in Sarasota
Jury Duty & Arrest Warrant Scam Reported in Sarasota County
WHAT IS THE SCAM?
The Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller warns citizens of the resurgence of a common scam:
Residents are being telephoned and told there is a warrant for their arrest for having missed jury duty in Sarasota County, then are asked to send money to resolve the matter.
BE PREPARED TO ASK THE CALLER QUESTIONS.
Callers conducting this scam have identified themselves as Sheriffs, or other Police Officers. Ask the caller for their name, phone number, and the date you were supposed to attend jury duty. This will more than likely cause the scammer to hang up.
DO NOT PAY MONEY IN RESPONSE TO THIS KIND OF CALL.
Neither law enforcement nor the Clerk of Court will ask jurors for payment of fines over the phone. Unless you have initiated the call, never give out your personal information over the phone.
BEFORE ACTING ON AN UNSOLICITED REQUEST, CONTACT THE CLERK’S JURY OFFICE at (941) 861-7425 TO CONFIRM WHETHER THE CALLER’S CLAIMS ARE LEGITIMATE. PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST JURY DUTY, ARREST, & OTHER PHONE SCAMS.
